improved self-image exercise

This self-image exercise will help you figure out exactly how you see yourself from day to day. Having this information can help you get started on raising self-esteem and changing your self-image for the better.

Improved Self-image Exercise

Describe yourself in detail in the following categories. Be as honest as possible. Think about how you are ‘in general’. Here we go…

    1. In my career (or school), I…
    2. In my various relationships (describe yourself in all important relationships), I…
    3. My personality…
    4. Compared to others, I…
    5. When life doesn’t go as planned, I…
    6. In my day to day functioning, I…
    7. Based on my appearance, I…
    8. I am most satisfied with…
    9. I am most dissatisfied with…

Now go through items 1 through 7 and rate yourself, using a percentage score, on how well you’re meeting your expectations of yourself (where you are now and where you’d really like to be). For example, if you’re only half happy with how well you handle life when things go unplanned (item #5) than give yourself a score of 50%.

How to interpret the self-image exercise results?

Everyone has an ideal image of how they’d like to be in order to be happy. Use your percentage scores to help you figure out how far off you are from being at your best. Then re-read your answers and see which areas you’re having most problems with.

Your opinion of yourself affects your behaviour and attitude. If you say to yourself, “I am not a person who can…” or “I am not a person with good people skills…” you’re probably turning away the exact opportunities you need to show yourself how good you can be. This keeps you stuck believing the same negative things about yourself.

Re-read your answers and pay attention to the overall pattern in your beliefs and attitude. Can you find any evidence in your life to help you change your current opinion, beliefs and attitude about yourself? Can you build new evidence?
